The Institute, which takes place in Pembroke College, Oxford, is an opportunity for bright and ambitious students to immerse themselves in a selection of carefully chosen, cutting edge topics, under the guidance of university and industry experts. The courses will culminate in individual research projects that the students will be able to include in their transcripts.

A Day in the Life

Breakfast in Hall
Students will meet with their tutors, in small groups, 6 mornings a week, for 3 hours, for class and, as the month progresses, to conduct their own research.
Students can choose to have lunch at any of the many local restaurants or sandwich shops
Three afternoons a week, participants will benefit from presentations on a selection of vital topics to help prepare them as they transition into higher education and the job market. When there is no class, they are free to join in organized activities or trips and tours in and around Oxford

AI: Designing Intelligent Systems

The course will begin by introducing students to the approaches and techniques required to carry out a successful International Relations research project. At the same time, the instructor will propose a range of topics students might wish to concentrate on. Students will finalize their choices – in concertation with the instructor – at the end of the first week, after which the instructor will provide them with the materials required to carry out their research. The students will work on their projects, under their supervisors, during morning class time and, as the program progresses, several afternoons will also be set aside to enable them to complete their projects. The results will be presented, conference-style, to the team. Research projects might include building an AI chatbot, designing to compensate for bias, designing AI to make it accessible. Alternatively, they might consider papers on issues such as why AI is considered biased, or can machines make art, or why Is AI better at diagnosing disease than doctors? Naturally, wherever possible, our supervisors will do their best to accommodate specific interests.

Business and Finance in the 21st century

The course will begin by introducing students to the approaches and techniques required to carry out a successful Business or Finance-related research project. At the same time, the instructor will propose a range of topics students might wish to concentrate on. Students will finalize their choices – in concertation with the instructor – at the end of the first week, after which the instructor will provide them with the materials required to carry out their research. The students will work on their projects, under their supervisors, during morning class and, as the program progresses, several afternoons will also be set aside to enable them to complete their projects. The results will be presented, conference-style, to the team. Options might include topics such as a comprehensive, professional, business proposal, a research paper into topics such as how realistic crypto and its imitators are as replacement global currencies, the consequences, for the US and the world, of de-dollarization, or whether governments should always endeavor to fight inflation. Naturally, wherever possible, our supervisors will do their best to accommodate specific interests.

Engineering: Methods, Models, Applications

The course will begin by introducing students to the approaches and techniques required to carry out a successful Engineering research project. At the same time, the instructor will propose a range of topics students might wish to concentrate on. Students will finalize their choices – in concertation with the instructor – at the end of the first week, after which the instructor will provide them with the materials required to carry out their research. The students will work on their projects, under their supervisors, during the morning class though, as the program progresses, several afternoons will also be set aside to enable them to complete them. The results will be presented, conference-style, to the team. Research projects might include designing a campus energy monitoring system, researching the feasibility of recycling bottles into clothing, analyzing how blade-shape affects the power output of small-scale wind turbines, analyzing the impact of additive manufacturing on aerospace component design, evaluating small-scale designs for capturing CO₂ directly from air, researching storage and transport challenges of hydrogen as a clean fuel. Naturally, wherever possible, our supervisors will do their best to accommodate specific interests.

Green Futures: Solutions to Environmental Challenges

The course will begin by introducing students to the approaches and techniques required to carry out a successful research project related to the Environmental crisis. At the same time, the instructor will propose a range of topics students might wish to concentrate on. Students will finalize their choices – in concertation with the instructor – at the end of the first week, after which the instructor will provide them with the materials required to carry out their research. The students will work on their projects, under their supervisors, during morning class and, as the program progresses, several afternoons will also be set aside to enable them to complete their projects. The results will be presented, conference-style, to the team. Options might include topics such as does carbon offset actually achieve anything? Why is solar so abundant but so costly? Does recycling work or is it a sham and, if it is, how could it be made to work? How do experts unravel changing weather patterns? Should governments enforce stricter environmental norms? Naturally, wherever possible, our supervisors will do their best to accommodate specific interests.

International Relations in a Post-Unipolar World

The course will begin by introducing students to the approaches and techniques required to carry out a successful International Relations research project. At the same time, the instructor will propose a range of topics students might wish to concentrate on. Students will finalize their choices – in concertation with the instructor – at the end of the first week, after which the instructor will provide them with the materials required to carry out their research. The students will work on their projects, under their supervisors, during morning class and, as the program progresses, several afternoons will also be set aside to enable them to complete the project. The results will be presented, conference-style, to the team. Research papers might include topics such as assessing the effectiveness of global climate agreements or whether the UN and its agencies still serve a purpose and, if not, what, if anything, could replace them? Is the American century really over? Or are we simply obsessed with declinism? How effective are sanctions, using two case-studies as examples? Is Globalization actually improving lives? Is there a case for reparations to the developing world and how might they be calculated and disbursed? Naturally, wherever possible, our supervisors will do their best to accommodate specific interests.

Medicine and Public Health

The course will begin by introducing students to the approaches and techniques required to carry out a successful Medicine, or Medicine and Public Health-related, research project. At the same time, the instructor will propose a broad range of topics students might wish to concentrate on. Students will finalize their choices – in concertation with the instructor – at the end of the first week, after which the instructor will provide them with the materials required to carry out their research. The students will work on their projects, under their supervisors, during morning class time though, as the program progresses, several afternoons will also be set aside to enable them to complete their projects. The results will be presented, conference-style, to the team. Options might include topics as varied as evaluating how vaccines shape public health outcomes, the causes of the obesity epidemic, it’s consequences, and public health strategies to combat rising obesity rates in young people, researching the links between pollution and respiratory diseases, how to address the global challenge of diabetes, or even ethical aspects of modern medicine. Wherever possible our supervisors will try to accommodate particular interests.

Cultural Enrichment

Every class is designed to use Oxford as a teaching tool. When not in class, students have access to a full range of optional activities designed to help them discover Oxford and immerse themselves in English life. They can go on tours of sights like the Bodleian Library and Christ Church, take part in a variety of sports (including Quidditch), attend local Shakespeare productions, or might go on field trips to Stonehenge and London.

Residence Info

Accommodations and Rooms

In Oxford, students live in rooms that are occupied by undergraduates during the year. Students are housed in singles or doubles. Students can request a private bathroom (for a fee), on a first-come, first-served basis.

Facilities

Students have access to common areas within the residences as well as a variety of sporting and educational facilities (gyms, basketball courts, tennis courts, pitches). Oxbridge provides every program with computers, so students have daily access to email and social media. The program staff maintains message boards and distributes mail every day.

Meals

Students enjoy breakfast and dinner on campus. Breakfast is primarily continental style with choices such as cereal, yogurt, fruit, toast, coffee, and tea. Several options are available at dinner, including a vegetarian dish and a salad bar. Special dinners are regularly held, and each program ends with a formal banquet. Students are responsible for their own lunch, which can be purchased from a college snack bar or one of the many sandwich shops, small restaurants, patisseries, or bodegas near each residence.

After the Program

Shortly after the program, all students and their parents receive a comprehensive set of grade reports, presenting their course syllabus and highlighting their specific contributions and achievements within their course(s). Most of our alumni later ask for additional copies to include in their college applications.
